 A Questioned Purchase
« Thread Started on Sept 3, 2007, 1:19am »

A figure dressed in a large overcoat headed over to the bookshop, her eyes blocked from view by a dark blue fedora. The overcoat was large and brown in color, frayed on the seams and on the end of the sleeves. It was heavy and made of a strange suede-like material and it reached almost to her ankles. The coat had belonged to her grandfather, a man who she disliked but not quite stop loving. He had ruined her family name and left it in shambles, and it was up to her to earn the name back.

The coat was not a muggle piece of clothing, although the rest of what she wore was. It was charmed with an ant-age spell, although the charm was wearing off. Sable was thinking of re-doing the charm, but she liked it looking frayed and age.

The cold air bit at her face, and her cheeks were slightly red. Her long auburn hair blew about her in the coming-and-going winds, although that never bothered her. The same things happened on a broom, although the air came at her much faster. She really never minded wind or the cold. Besides, her overcoat was a good shield against it.

Sable looked into the window of the bookshop, turning her head slightly. Did she really need a new transfiguration book? Perhaps she'd do better with something else. She knew Pansy had been looking at a book on the dark arts, perhaps she should purchase one, she was rather ignorant on that subject although she would never admit it. Ever.

Sable sighed, rather unsure. She wasn't in a decisive mood that day, but oh well, she was hard up for some reading material.

A tall, somewhat masculine, rather good-looking boy, dressed in black robes stood off to the left side of Flourish and Blotts Bookshop, examining a book on the Dark Arts. He seemed quite enthralled in whatever it was he was reading within the golden pages of the antique book.

The bookstore was rather crowded that semi-warm fall afternoon, much to Adrian Pucey's surprise. He wasn't one to be caught in a bookshop on such a lovely day, seeing as how he wasn't a big reader... never interested him much. He had decided on a day out, to clear his thoughts and maybe do some minor shopping to keep himself occupied. It was a Saturday afternoon and nothing interesting or entertaining was going on around Hogwarts, so he'd decided to make use of his time and wander about Diagon Alley. It was one of his favorite places, aside from Hogsmeade.

Matter-of-fact, Adrian was supposed to be hanging out with Draco, Blaise, Marcus and a few of his other friends, but those plans were shot to hell when Adrian had woken up and found Pansy Parkinson, the little pug-faced brat, wrapped up in Draco's embrace two dorms over with the door to his room wide open, Blaise passed out in the common room, a bottle of firewhiskey in his hand and Marcus... well, Marcus was nowhere to be found.

Looking up from his reading, Adrian's eyes darted out the rather clean windows of the bookshop, only to see... no, it couldn't be... could it?

Sable looked around casually, a cold look in her cool hazel eyes, the grey in them really set off that afternoon. Not that anyone could see her eyes, though. And not that it mattered all that much. She paused for a moment or so to take some of her hair off her hat as some of it had blown over it. Long hair could be hard to handle, but she didn't really mind that much. She loved long hair, though getting it untangled when it was rather thick was impossible, at least for her.

As she kept staring into the window, deciding, her eyes dragged over to the side. And from under the brim of her hat she saw someone. Someone she knew, someone she was sort of angry at and had been for just over a year. Part of her argued that she couldn't be sure, but yes, she just knew it was him. Him. Adrian Pucey. Him.

He never did believe her that she didn't leave him on purpose. Not with most of the other Slytherins telling him who they saw her with and a select other few making up stories. She didn't really care all that much anymore, really not at all. She had given up on him, mostly because she had never seen him. She had assumed he had graduated from Hogwarts the year before, but something now told her that he hadn't, that he was still there, and that this year he would be haunting her. Right now he was already haunting her heart as it gave a flutter, and then stopped beating in surprise. Why was he here? She had assumed he never bothered to read unless he had to. She knew many Slytherins like that.

She looked away from him as she headed through the doorway. Maybe, maybe it hadn't been him. But there was no way she was speaking to him. At all.

Adrian's eyes immediately darted back down to the book in his hands after spending more than a few moments looking at her. That beautiful, delicate auburn-haired girl that he had taken to the Yule Ball his fourth year... yes, it was her. Sable Gorry. The girl that had dumped his little axel not even ten minutes into the ball. He still could never understand why... he was a year ahead of her! He, if he so chose to, was supposed to drop her... not the other way around! The two Slytherins never spoke after that night... not once. Many stories had formulated over, what more than half the student population at Hogwarts called, "The Saga of the Slytherin Lovers" over what had truly happened that evening. Adrian had chose to ignore such things, no matter what was said, who he heard it from and whenever he glanced at that gorgeous sixth year from the corner of his eye in the Great Hall or on the Quidditch field during a game. Which would clearly explain why he was in the hospital so much every year thereafter after a game.

Adrian swallowed and stood still as a board when Sable entered the bookshop. He watched her out of the corner of his eye, but tried to keep his focus mainly on the book that was now laying limp in his hands. No justice. She's the past, Pucey, you bloody fool! Get with the program! he kept chiding in the back of his mind. There was no time for women of the past. In Adrian's mind, women were nothing more than dolls to play around with for a while and then rip the head's off of the next morning... if he had the desire to do so of course.

As he watched her roam about, part of his heart sank. There was still something about her, something about Sable Gorry that Adrian Pucey couldn't put away.

Maybe she had his heart?

Sable looked around the shop, seemingly scanning titles but really just taking her time walking around. She could no longer focus. Why was he here? Near Flourish and Blotts? Practically in Flourish and Blotts? He wasn't supposed to be, this was her place, her little piece of peace. Yes, piece of peace. Her section of desire.

So go away.

A disgruntled expression swept over her. Little prat. Why now, why now, why now? She asked herself over and over again, playing with scenarios in her head in case she decided to speak to him. But she knew she would never work up the nerve. She had heard so many stories, heard the same ones over so many times she could barely even remember if she actually had had to do something that night or not. Luckily, she had a journal and she had wrote in it exactly what had happened. Well, mabe not exactly, but what she had had to do and what she had felt about it. And about what had taken place after.

Sable attempted to look and see him out of the window, but the window was almost out of her line of vision and she knew that she wouldn't be able to see him anyway unless she pressed her face up against the class to look. And she wasn't that desperate to get another look at him. But really...

Sable shook her head to clear her mind. No. She was here to buy a book. That was all. That was absolutely all.

Adrian had been watching Sable's every move out of the corner of his eye since she entered the store. The book that was in his hands was now a distant memory even when he tried to pretend like his focus was on Darks Arts Through the Ages. She was enveloping him in her beauty and her simple presence in the small bookstore. Sable was heaven on earth to Adrian. However, he could never admit or say such a thing to her... or anyone for that matter. Showing he had the slightest bit of heart would be detrimental to his status at Hogwarts. He was a Slytherin and would remain as such forever... until the day they buried him six feet under.

Adrian hadn't been paying attention because the next thing he knew, the book in his hands hit the floor with a rather loud plop!. Adrian swallowed, hoping he hadn't attracted any attention before he bent down to pick up the book and walk over to the opposite side of the store to set it back down on its home shelf.

But she was there. She would be a mere two feet from him. That was if he would even be able to march over to the bookshelf and put the book back where he belonged. What a haunting scene that was... and would be...

Quickly Sable pulled out a book from the shelf and read the title on the cover. "Dark Arts From Within" stared up at her in a large and unsettling text design. Cheesy name, she thought as she placed it back without a second look. Finally, she settled her thoughts long enough to look at a few more titles before freaking out in her head again.

Oh my gosh, oh my god, oh my gosh.... ran through her a million more times, anxiety stressing her out. She tilted her hat back slightly. Suddenly she felt very, very warm.

Plop!

Sable raced around, looking for the noise. Sable gaped as she saw Adrian, in her stress she had forgotten that he was inside and somehow placed him outside. Now she felt even worse. She watched as he bent down to pick it up, and then whipped back around to view the title selection in front of her, starting from the beginning again. Authors with weird last names met her eyes, but she barely noticed them anymore.

Go over there or not? She really didn't want to, but then maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Was she crazy? It certainly would be bad. It would be worse than bad. Try horrific. Try a ten of the rictor scale of bad. Bad, horrible, traumatizing.

Adrian could no longer be bothered with such childishness. He would go over to where he had gotten the book from, set it back in its desired spot, browse around a little more, hopefully to find a book useful for his lessons and leave. Simple as that. No Sable. No love/hateness, no worries... all would be well.

Adrian took a deep breath and sauntered over, slowly, in Sable's direction, towards the bookshelf. He feared she was watching him under cautious eyes... that only caused him to stop halfway to his destination, in the middle of a crowded store with people walking around him and some right into him, without a care in the world. Sighing nervously, Adrian slowly walked, slowly, slowly... he was panting and sweating like a pig now. Not good at all.

By this time, Adrian was exactly one foot away from where Sable stood. "Oh screw the bloody world," he muttered under his breath, setting the book down on a nearby stack and turning to leave the bookstore.

Sable tensed as he neared her. But then quickly her mind reverted back to it's regular way. She decided it was time to end this. She would obviously be seeing him around school again, seeing him in the store was only an omen and the first of many sightings, she just knew it. She hated it, but she knew it was fate. Fate was something she had recently started to believe in, and now she was sure of fate.

Her eyes scanned him for a moment, looking at him for the first time in a long while. Yeah, he was just as good looking as ever. Probably more. Well, before she had never really taken notice in his appearance, and before he had asked her to the Yule ball, much to her surprise mind you, she had never bothered with him much. The mandrake episode had weirded her out, slightly.

She watched as Adrian headed in her direction, then turned away. But shortly after she felt a presence near her, and she knew it was him. He wasn't far away from her. She took a deep breath. She knew he had seen her, obviously. She didn't want to look like the childish one, she wanted to look much better than that, especially in case someone else was watching the two of them.

"Hello, Pucey." She said icily. It couldn't be called much of a greeting. She put emphasis on his last name, she couldn't put a stop to that. Her voice was filled with a sort of emotion it was barely possible to describe, but she was always rather emotional when it came to things like anger and irritation. She was rather moody and irritable, but she wasn't exactly sure if he knew that. She didn't even know if she had been like that in her fourth year, perhaps a little, but definitely not as bad as now.

When Adrian heard her voice, that angel's voice speak he almost died. While he stood there, transfixed and still, he told himself to remain calm, cool and collected before he turned around and looked at Sable square in the eye, admiring her beauty from where he stood, mere inches from her, practically.

"Gorry," he nodded, giving her an up and down look before crossing his arms over his chest and staring at her, expressionless. "What brings you here today?" He asked, starting simple conversation that would probably not get very far very fast as far as he was concerned. Though, Adrian still felt Sable was the most beautiful creature to ever walk the face of the earth... he always would. Though, his mind was in shambles, he was having trouble processing a simple declarative sentence no less.

All the memories from fourth year came flooding back into his mind and he was certainly not enjoying rehashing such events. Pull it together, Pucey. She's just a doll, remember? Maybe if he kept telling himself that, he'd get five minutes sleep at night.

Sable looked at him, her eyes flicking from the door and back. She fidgeted slightly, the closeness bothering her. She disliked his expressionless face and wanted to get away from there. But she was going to stay until he moved, she was not about to pull a fast one.

"Books." She sneered, "Books bring me here today." She said it as though he was the stupidest beast she had ever met. She did not ask about him, but was rather blunt. She gestured around them, at the books. She was good at exaggerated hand movements, she had gotten a lot of practice time in.

Inside, she was seething at herself while her brain yelled "Run! Run! Run!" As if she were a poor shrew surrounded by enemies, like hungry birds and cats. She wanted to leave, but she grounded herself, almost stomping her boots when she told herself to shut up. So she kept her eyes icy, her voice cold, her body stony, and her face kept the sneer. It was all about attitude, the way one felt, if she hit the right feeling maybe he'd go away. If only she could whip out her wand and send him away, or at least apparate...she wished she knew how to apparate oh so very badly.

"Wow, what an answer," Adrian spat sarcastically, the words coming from his mouth, dripping with disdain. As he looked at her, he tried to keep from reaching out and brushing aside a stray piece of hair that was covering her left eye. Covering the sparkle that always shown in them... Pucey, get your head on straight., he told himself once again. If he didn't stop with his childish little looks and such, he be digging an even deeper hole for himself.

"So, you came to Flourish and Blotts to buy some reading materials, eh?" Adrian pushed, crossing his arms over his chest, his eyes resting on Sable and only Sable. He stared at her intently and waited patiently for an answer, she'd eventually break, no doubt. If kept pressing questions and the matter of her presence in the bookshop, he was sure he'd get somewhere, anyway, faster than he would've before, considering his original plan was to stand in a corner, a book limp in his pale hands, staring at a girl out of the corner of his eye.

Adrian stood tall and proud and did not remove his gaze from her at all. That took discipline and Adrian Pucey had a bucketload, plus more if you really wanted to get technical. "Well, are you gonna stand there all day like a git or what?"

Sable smirked, twisting her mouth slightly. "You asked, numbskull. So who here would be the git?" She rolled her eyes, not elaborating. It was none of his business that she felt ignorant on the subject of the dark arts, that she felt insulted by her own ignorance. Really now. All she needed was a bit of research, although some of the images in the books were disturbing her ever so slightly. But at the same time she enjoyed being near Adrian again, even if she was finding him sort of irksome. But in a good way, she supposed. Maybe he'd eventually understand that she hadn't left him intentionally. That everyone else was wrong. That the stories they made up were wrong and untruthful, though no less than she would have said had the same thing happened to someone else. She hated that, but she also assisted in fueling the rumours. She wanted everyone of her back, so she had slyly gone along with them until it got old. Things were less interesting when people didn't argue with them.

She knew social workings so very well.

Sable sized him up once more, reserving judgement. This wasn't going well, but she never backed down.

"You're still the git here, Gorry, no matter which bloody way you look at it," Adrian told the petite Gryffindor. "It's not my fault you're not as advanced in the Dark Arts as some of us." He said slowly, winking and presenting Sable with a lovely, yet rather devilish Adrian Pucey smirk. His gift of legimency and occulemcy was amazing and would become legendary some day.

Reading into Sable's thoughts was the easy part, understanding her feelings and opinions on what she was thinking was the difficult part. Adrian didn't possess that talent... and probably never would, truth be told. He thought of the rumors and everything that was running through Sable's mind... he felt nothing, only wondered. If anything, his mother was right when she told him many moons ago that you should believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.

He ignored that little fact for quite some time now. Maybe it was time to set things straight.

Attempting to open his mouth and say something, Adrian failed. He simply couldn't do it... it would be too difficult. All he did was nod his head slightly and turn to leave... not getting very far in the process.
